Crystal Lake: A Clear Path Forward – Our 2026 Lake Health & Weed Mitigation Plan

Crystal Lake is one of the most valued parts of Koocanusa Village, and we know how important it is for residents and future buyers to feel confident that the lake is being properly cared for. After an unusually warm and weed-heavy 2025 season, we’re pleased to share the significant, science-based steps now underway to keep Crystal Lake healthy, clear, and safe.

Understanding the 2025 Weed Surge

The 2025 season brought an early and prolonged stretch of hot weather that lasted into September, creating ideal conditions for rapid weed growth. Despite this, our independently collected weekly water samples—submitted to Interior Health—confirmed the lake remained safe for public use all season. 

Our 2025 Response and What’s Already Been Built

To address the weed growth quickly and responsibly, we partnered with Advanced Agriculture, a company known for environmentally responsible lake-care solutions. Their lead advisor, Kaylee Day Chief, brings strong experience working with prairie and interior lakes and is frequently consulted by communities such as Lake Bonavista and municipal lake-management programs. Under her guidance, we applied a people-, pet-, and wildlife-safe treatment that helped slow the weed growth. While the treatment reduced surface growth, some dead vegetation settled on the lakebed—something we planned to tackle in the next phase.

In preparation for long-term improvements, we also built the supporting infrastructure needed for a full lake restoration. A dedicated electrical and pump room is now complete at the south end of Crystal Lake. This room will power the aeration system, allow controlled drainage, and support the safe refilling of the lake.

Once the ice melts in spring 2026, the lake will be drained so we can remove the dead weeds that settled last year and install the aeration equipment. Airlines will be buried along the west side of the lake and connected to three distribution points. After installation, the lake will be refilled using our dedicated, registered freshwater well at North Beach. 

Long-Term Lake Health Strategy for 2026 and Beyond

To keep Crystal Lake healthy for the long term, we’re installing a new aeration system this spring. Aeration is one of the most effective ways to improve water quality in shallow lakes. It works by circulating fresh oxygen through the water, which helps prevent weed overgrowth and creates a healthier, clearer lake overall.

The system going in is built specifically for lakes like ours and includes aeration units placed across the lakebed. We will also continue using additional treatments from Advanced Agriculture during the hottest months to help manage sunlight and support lake balance.

Together, these steps address the root causes of weed growth and help ensure Crystal Lake stays healthy year after year.
