At Koocanusa Village, we are fortunate to have Crystal Lake at the heart of our community—a man-made freshwater lake designed for connection, recreation, and natural beauty. As with many shallow lakes, Crystal Lake occasionally experiences algae blooms, particularly during the warmer months. These occurrences are common and expected in this type of water body. Also, we would point out that not all algae present a health risk. First, here’s a bit of info on Crystal Lake:
Where does the water come from for this lake?
Water level will remain at the same elevation year-round and is provided by two certified freshwater wells at the north end of the lake which are designed to recycle the entire volume of the lake every 30 days so it remains fresh.
How was this lake formed?
The lakebed of Crystal Lake is lined with sand, covered with a welded rubber liner and topped with additional sand to create a fresh lake that is approximately 600 metres long by 75 metres wide. The lake is no deeper than three metres, and is designed for swimming in the summer and skating in the winter.
We are beginning to provide information outlining what’s happening at the lake, how we’re addressing the algae, and what’s coming next as we continue to invest in both the lake’s long-term health and its role as a space for community enjoyment.
Our Commitment to Crystal Lake
What matters is how we respond. At Koocanusa Village, we are committed to managing Crystal Lake with care, transparency, and science-backed solutions that prioritize the safety of our residents, pets, and local wildlife.
Crystal Lake is safe for people and pets
The presence of algae does not automatically mean the water is unsafe. In fact, the current algae observed in Crystal Lake is non-toxic and being carefully monitored. Our team is managing the lake using safe, natural methods that do not pose risks to people or animals.
We’re investing in long-term lake health
We are conducting monthly biological treatments using non-toxic methods that work to restore the lake’s natural balance over time. In addition, we flush Crystal Lake with 80,000 to 100,000 gallons of fresh water every week, and we are currently installing a new outflow system to improve water movement and allow for additional freshwater inflow when required.
We rely on science and proven expertise
Our remediation approach is led by Advanced Agriculture, a Canadian-owned company that specializes in biological water treatment and works closely with municipalities across the country. Their products and methods support long-term water clarity, reduce nutrient overload, and preserve ecosystem health—without introducing harmful chemicals.
What’s Fact and What’s Fiction: Mythbusting Crystal Lake
We understand that some misinformation has circulated around Crystal Lake. We want to address these concerns head-on with clear, factual information.
MYTH: The lake is unsafe for dogs and children.
FACT: All treatments are non-toxic and safe for people, pets, and wildlife. Crystal Lake is open and safe to enjoy. The naturally occurring algae currently present is non-toxic. We monitor the water condition with weekly samples which are analyzed by our biology experts.
MYTH: Algae means the lake is dirty.
FACT: Algae is a natural part of freshwater ecosystems and becomes more visible in warm, shallow lakes like ours. Our treatment approach addresses the root causes, including nutrient buildup and organic matter—not just the visible surface symptoms.
MYTH: Nothing is being done.
FACT: Crystal Lake is flushed weekly with fresh water and treated monthly with natural, biological solutions. The lake is also registered with Interior Health, and weekly water samples are submitted by Sampson Water Services for analysis and ongoing monitoring.
MYTH: Chemical treatments would solve this faster.
FACT: While chemical algaecides may provide short-term visual clarity, they come with environmental risks. Products like copper sulfate can kill fish and other aquatic organisms, reduce oxygen levels, and destroy the beneficial bacteria that keep lakes healthy. Our natural approach supports long-term lake health and is far safer for residents, pets, and wildlife.
We’re Listening. We’re Acting. We’re In This Together.
Koocanusa Village is committed to doing right by Crystal Lake—for today, and for years to come. That means choosing natural solutions over fast chemical fixes, engaging with residents openly, and continuing to improve both the health of the lake and the experience it provides.
